I didn’t even know there was a wind powered vehicle land speed record, but there is, and it stands at an astounding 116.7 MPH. I’m not sure how they pulled that off, but the Greenbird (pictured above) is going to attempt to crush that record on some windy day. Speaking of windy days, last night I had enough flatulence to launch that thing into orbit… but then I suppose it would be considered a gas powered vehicle.

In an attempt to attract the world’s wealthiest tourists, Dubai is creating many of the most interesting structures in the world. This most recent project is an incredible structure that allows the occupants to choose which direction their floor faces. It also produces much more energy than it uses, thanks to the large wind turbines located between floors. This building actually generates ten times the power that it needs, putting that energy back into the power grid.

When most people think of windmills, their thoughts turn to tall towers with propellers on them. In the spirit of thinking out of the box, someone came up with the concept of a flying windmill. Now, I have several problems with this idea. First, this thing weighs 1,100 pounds, and it is flying. Not that I have a problem with heavy objects in the air, mind you, but this is supposed to be harvesting energy, not wasting it. I imagine that they get it in the air by powering the rotors. The whole thing just seems like it uses more energy than it generates.
You can thank the folks at Sky WindPower of San Diego for this lofty concept. Let’s just be glad that they aren’t trying to reinvent the San Diego singles scene , because that could get messy. I mean, last time I went to San Diego, the most memorable things were homeless people and otters.
